PGAS’s Wildlife Habitat Program

Concerned about the loss of habitat for birds, pollinators, and other wildlife? Want to make a difference by creating beneficial and beautiful habitat on your own property? Need a jumpstart?

This transformation took place at a home in Mount Rainier, MD. The “after” provides much more, for both wildlife and the human eye.

How can you participate?

Sign up for a free garden consultation, or if you have wildlife gardening or naturalist experience, consider being trained as a habitat advisor.

Simple Steps to Create a Native Plant Garden in Your Yard

Even a container garden is a big help to birds, pollinators, and other beneficial insects.

THIS IS WHAT HOMEOWNERS ARE SAYING ABOUT THE PROGRAM:

“I’ve been thinking and reading about natural habitats. It was good to actually talk to someone in person.”

“The visit really helped me focus in on my beginning priorities. I’m an absolute beginner, and didn't know where to start. The habitat advisors helped me feel more calm and confident.”

“Having someone listen to me and talk about my specific yard was helpful.”

“This program feels like it’s given us a foundation we can build on.”

Community Demonstration Gardens

In 2022, the Wildlife Habitat Program, with the help of a Chesapeake Bay Trust grant, installed a native garden in front of Joe's Movement Emporium in Mount Rainier. We are now adapting the same model for use on the University of Maryland College Park Campus, and we are happy to share our experience with other communities and organizations interested in creating a wildlife demonstration garden.
