David Mozurkewich will be leading this field trip to Fort Smallwood park
in Anne Arundel County for hawks and other spring migrants. This park
is a great place to watch spring migration on days with southwest to
northwest winds. The fun begins around sunrise. For the first few
hours, thousands of songbirds can be seen flying north along the east
side of the park. By about 9AM, hawks begin to replace the songbirds
and can continue throughout the day. We will also take time off from
the flight to search the park for the warblers and flycatchers that
decided to rest in the park before heading north across the Patapsco
River.
Meet David anytime after the park opens at 05:30. To reach Fort Smallwood Park take the BW parkway north to exit 100 then east to the first traffic light. Turn left (north) on Magothy Bridge Road/Hog Nect Road and continue to the T intersection
with route 173. Turn right. The road ends at Fort Smallwood Park. Be
prepared to pay the $6 admission fee. Bring water and dress appropriately for the weather. Please tell David of your intent to join this trip by emailing him at mozurk@bellatlantic.net.
